I started thinking it would be narrative non-fiction and went down that path because every storyline in the book is based on truth. I feel like my family’s story takes the broad, global sweep of what was going on at the time - because they really were exposed to almost all aspects of the war, except luckily for concentration camps - and humanizes it in a way that I hope will keep it relevant for readers and make it feel less like a lesson in history and a little bit more personal. I think it offers a very personal and human lens through which we can understand that time in history. Q: What do you hope people get out of reading it?Ī: For me, it’s such a story of hope and love and inspiration, which I think we can all use a good dose of these days. I heard these bits and pieces of stories unlike anything I had ever heard before and I think it was then that the idea was seeded to someday write the story down. That’s when I was introduced to the greater Kurc family story.
